In Hot Pursuit of Fresh Jelly And Other Domestic Dabblings
08.05.08 (4:12 pm) [edit]
When I visited Eddie and his family for the first time earlier this year in February , I came knife to bread with some of the most delectable jelly that had ever passed these lips.I had a dim memory of my German Oma making cherry marmalade&nbs p; and how good it tasted spread on a thick, fresh buttered slice of black crusted rye .She kept it in the cellar in her Idar-Oberstein house (built circa early 1900's)and would ask me to bring up jars while I was there visiting every summer during my childhood.
This spreadable gold was homemade by his parents and Grandma, and I immediately became entranced by the idea of learning to make some myself.
Fast forward six months , and here I am learning how to make ( after helping pick and process the fruit) .
I love it !
Made about 18 jars ( with help of course ) so far of yellow plum jelly .My next excursions into Kentucky cooking will include dried beans, homemade biscuits and chicken -n-dumplings.
Yes, I am hopelessly domestic .
It works for us , so why fight it ??!
